Two youths, both friends, were killed after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a speeding mini-truck in outer Delhi’s Alipur in early hours of Monday. The accident took place around 4.30am near Bakauli bus stop. The victims were returning from Murthal where they had gone for dinner.

They were identified as Deepak, 22, and Prashant, 19 - both residents of Wazirabad in north Delhi. The two had gone to Murthal along with their common friend who was riding his own motorcycle.

A police officer said the three were returning home when the victim’s motorcycle was hit from behind by a speeding mini-truck.

“Their friend made a call to the police control room and a PCR van was immediately dispatched to the accident spot. The van rushed them to Raja Harish Chandra Hospital, where the doctors pronounced them dead on arrival,” said the police officer, adding that their bodies were later sent to Babu Jag Jivan Ram Hospital for post-mortem examination.

After the accident, the officer said, the errant driver of the mini-truck stopped his vehicle some meters away from the accident spot and fled. A case of hit-and-run and rash and negligent driving causing deaths was registered at the Alipur police station and the mini-truck was confiscated.

“We traced the owner of the truck and at his instance the errant driver, Arvind Tyagi, a resident of Vishnu Garden, was arrested later in the afternoon,” the officer added.
