Against the backdrop of the death of the Delhi gangrape victim, officials of the US embassy on Monday lit candles as a tribute to the victims of gender violence.

Senior members of the American embassy lit candles this morning and wished for a more peaceful world in 2013.

The 23-year-old budding physiotherapist succumbed to her injuries at a Singapore hospital on Saturday night after being gang-raped in a moving bus here on December 16.

The embassy had earlier offered condolences to the girl's family and had expressed their resolve to stop all forms of gender-based violence.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that the victim of a horrific assault in New Delhi on December 16 has died from injuries sustained during that brutal attack. We offer our heartfelt condolences to her family during this difficult time," the US embassy had said in a statement.

"As we honour the memory of this brave young woman, we also recommit ourselves to changing attitudes and ending all forms of gender-based violence, which plagues every country in the world," it added.
