In a complete role reversal, students at Sri Venkateshwara College wait for their classes to happen each day. Their wait so far, however, has been fruitless.

A section of B.Com (Honours) students of the college have been going without teachers in two subjects since the beginning of the semester. The college has not managed to engage ad hoc teachers for Corporate Accounting and Indirect Taxation, two of the four subjects the students have to study this semester.

"We have not had a single class so far and have started to panic now. We only have till mid-April to finish our course and we have already lost out on 20 days," said a student on condition of anonymity.

With the introduction of the semester system two years ago, the course has to be completed in a time-bound manner to ensure good results. Missing teachers is certainly a problem that the students can do without. According to the college, however, they are "trying their best" to get a teacher as soon as possible.

"The post has to be filled up by a reserved category candidate. The problem is that we have not been able to find a teacher who fits the bill. There are no candidates. We found one teacher but before we could offer her a position, SGTB Khalsa College offered her one. We have managed to engage one teacher out of the two and are looking for a guest faculty as well," said RK Arora, head of the commerce department.

Filling up of vacant positions permanently in the university is currently on hold; the colleges have to engage ad hoc teachers in each semester.
