The distraught mother of the 23-year-old woman who died on Saturday after a brutal gangrape had to be hospitalised a day later because of extreme physical and mental exhaustion.
She had been by the victim's bedside the two weeks since the incident and ate little, family members said.
"She hardly ate in the past two weeks as she was close to her daughter. She is traumatised. We would try to feed her but she would barely eat half a chapatti," one of the gangrape victim's family members said. "She had been crying all these days. It has taken a toll on her health," he added.
The mother collapsed soon after the cremation and had to be put on saline drip at a local nursing home, where she stayed for about three hours, he said. "She went silent and has hardly spoken a word since the news of the death," he said.
According to the victim's neighbours, the woman was extremely close to her daughter, and the news of her death left her mother devastated.
"The girl was close to her mother and would help her around the house as well as study diligently. Everyone was proud of her but none more than her mother. She had to be rushed to the hospital in the morning after the funeral since she had collapsed and would not wake up," said a neighbour who has known the family for over a decade.
The victim's youngest brother is also, according to the neighbours, unwell and in shock.
"Too many people, including those from the neighbourhood, have been gathering outside the family's home since Saturday. The family is being disturbed even at the time of their deepest grief," said a neighbour who has been helping in keeping people away from the house.
