Why no stretcher for Sonia Gandhi, asks Modi

A day after Congress president Sonia Gandhi was taken ill during the debate on food security bill and had to be rushed to AIIMS, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi took a dig at the medical preparedness in Parliament.

“Concerned that basic medical emergency procedures were not used. Would have been better if a wheelchair or a stretcher was used in Parliament,” Modi tweeted on Tuesday.

“Considering her health, Soniaji should have been taken to hospital in a well-equipped ambulance. Still, doctors are best judges.”

Gandhi suffered chest pain and had to be taken to the premier institute even before the voting could be held for bill, her dream scheme to provide cheap food to 67% Indians.

Modi’s wishes for her speedy recovery failed to placate the Congress.

Congress spokesperson Bhakta Charan Das contended that in a civilised world, leaders should refrain from playing politics on the medical condition of other politicians.

“There is a doctor, there are medical facilities here but suddenly she came out. Her being taken to the hospital was a private matter,” Das said. “Is that a thing we should debate? I do not think any human being would raise these kinds of questions.”

Referring to the attack on Parliament during NDA rule, he added, “it could have been very well asked why Parliament attack was carried out by terrorists."

Parliamentary affairs minister Kamal Nath said, “All arrangements were there. What was considered appropriate by Mrs Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi and the medical team that was attending to her was done.”
