After the Delhi gang rape incident, the country’s youth will not allow the political class to ignore the issue of women’s safety any longer, Justice JS Verma told diplomats from the European Union (EU).

In a two-hour interaction with ambassadors and senior representatives from 25 EU member countries last week about the report submitted by the panel headed by him, Justice Verma responded to queries about the sustainability of the campaign for women-friendly laws in the country.

The former Chief Justice of India said the youth who protested peacefully are now carefully observing how much time their parliamentarians will take in updating the anti-rape laws.

“The EU envoys wanted to know how the committee prepared its report within a month and other issues related to gender justice in the  country,” Justice Verma told HT.

At the interaction organised by the Greek embassy, the diplomats wanted to know whether incidents of sexual assault against women were on the rise in the country.
