In the 11 months before she took charge in September, 2012, the total revenue collected in drives against the local sand mafia was Rs. 11.55 crore. Nagpal’s efforts earned the state Rs. 6.30 crore more, a 54.5% rise.

“The mining department helped her in her aggressive drives, which mostly used to take place during the night. She had no fear, and was very proactive when it came to preventing illegal sand mining,” said an official who was posted with Nagpal.
Nagpal began her drives against illegal sand mining soon after joining office.
“The sand mafia was scared because they realised she would not succumb to political or other pressures. Politicians used to think her attitude would change in a month or two, but she kept her crusade going,” said the official who did not want to be named.
