Commuters are forced to spend hours in traffic jams caused by faulty design of roads and inadequate signage at many places.
According to experts, motorists would not have to face congestion, had the planners of the city built a few more U-turns, slip roads, and underpasses at strategic locations.
"Newly-constructed double U-turns, traffic signage, slip roads, and zebra crossings need to be modified to avoid congestion. Several authority and traffic police officials do not have expertise in traffic management and they end up designing faulty slip roads and cuts," said Anurag Khandelwal, a Noida-based architect.
Commuters also attribute the problem to lack of implementation of traffic rules.
"Motorists take a U-turn on the Master Plan-3 Road at Sector 51/34 cut, where no traffic signal has been installed. In the absence of a policeman, this cut turns into a bottleneck during peak hours. Dozens of such unplanned cuts disrupt vehicular movement in Noida," said Anmol Singh, an executive of a Noida-based multi-national company.
Many office-goers spend more time on travelling than in office. "At least main roads of the city should be decongested," said Mukesh Kumar, who travels between Ghaziabad and Gurgaon through Noida daily.
Officials of the Noida authority also admit the need of more slip roads and underpasses in the city. The authority, however, said that it has been making all out effort to ensure smooth traffic.
It has planned to spend about Rs. 400 crore on the construction of underpasses and U-turns at various places. Of them, Rs. 200 will be spent on three underpasses proposed on the Master Plan-3 Road which is used by about 1.5 lakh commuters daily.
Underpasses will be constructed at City Centre Crossing, Sector 94 T-point and Sector 71/72 Crossing. The authority has also planned to invest Rs. 150 crore to build an underpass at Model Town where the Master Plan-3 Road merges with the National Highway-24.
According to officials, each underpass will be completed in 18 months from the day the work begins on the ground.
"We have already started work on the City Centre underpass project, which has a budget of Rs. 60 crore. Work on the Sector 94 T-point underpass will begin from November as we are about to select an agency to execute the project. On Sector 71/72 underpass project, work will begin once space for Metro pillars is earmarked properly," said AK Goyal, chief project engineer (CPE), Noida authority.
At present, motorists have to crawl through massive jams near City Centre, Sector 94, Sector 71/72, and Model Town T-point during peak hours. "The situation worsens as many commuters do not adhere to the traffic norms," said Bhavesh Gupta, a daily commuter.
According to authority officials, signal-free underpasses would provide relief to thousands of commuters travelling between Noida, Ghaziabad, South Delhi, Gurgaon, and Faridabad.
"We are likely to begin traffic diversion on the Master Plan-3 Road from October to make way for Sector 94 T-point underpass. Later, we will start diversion of traffic to make way for Model Town underpass," Goyal said.
Besides, the authority is constructing a U-turn between sectors 35 and 51 on the Master Plan-3 Road, and another near Mahamaya Flyover. Two other U-turns will be constructed on Delhi-Noida link road in front of Sector 15A.
"We have built a U-turn on Udyog Marg in front of Sector 14 and widened a 500-metre stretch to reduce congestion on the road," said an authority official.
