Green tribunal glare on groundwater extraction

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Thursday issued show-cause notices to Gautam Budh Nagar district magistrate Kumar Ravikant Singh and chief executive officers of Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna Expressway development authorities in a case related to the misuse of groundwater by developers.

The green body had on January 11 this year banned groundwater extraction.

The tribunal has also issued show-cause notices to all public agencies concerned for failing to implement the order. The order came after a five-member team appointed by the NGT said that some builders in the twin cities were extracting groundwater for construction. “The NGT has asked the district magistrate, CEO of Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna expressway authorities and chairman of the central ground water authority to be present before the court on September 9, ,” said Vikrant Tongad, the petitioner.
