Tension prevailed at the Attari border on Sunday when the police had to use water cannons and lathis to disperse BJP leaders and workers protesting against the death of Sarabjit Singh in a jail attack in Lahore.

Led by Punjab BJP chief Kamal Sharma, there were about 2,000 party workers who had assembled to pay tribute to Singh and later launch a protest march towards the border.

Sharma said: "We need to answer this nation in its own language. They do not deserve any sort of soft approach. Pakistan is a cruel country that has no feelings for foreign prisoners. The way Sarabjit Singh was killed shows this." As there were heavy police arrangements and barricades, the police first stopped the BJP workers from advancing but when they did not listen, the security persons used water cannons and the cane. The protestors damaged a police vehicle.
