The Congressmen in Jalandhar want a change in the party's state leadership. On Friday, they took their demand to Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi, who was on a day's visit to the city.

Gandhi had come to meet the workers. It was necessary, given the flagging spirits in the wake of the party's debacle in the assembly polls.

Many reasons had been cited for the loss - the Dalit voters' shift towards the BSP, the bungling in distribution of tickets, a failure to persuade the rebels, overconfidence and factionalism.

But the partymen trained guns on their leaders. Besides state Congress chief Amarinder Singh, his predecessor Mohinder Singh Kaypee and former minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh came under fire as well.

No state-level leader was present at the key interactive sessions at the Karwal Palace - a mansion on the outskirts of the city owned by Akali leader Darshan Singh Karwal - which had left the workers free to air their grievances.

Most workers were critical of Amarinder's style of functioning and asked Gandhi to remove him from the top job. Kartarpur Nagar council member Kamaljit Ohri said the Congress would not come to power in the next 100 years due to the "corrupt practices" of Amarinder and Jagjit Singh. Gandhi emerged as a good listener in the no-holds-barred sessions.
