In an apparent incident of social networking gone horribly wrong, a Meerut schoolgirl was allegedly abducted and gang-raped by a group that included her ‘Facebook friend’.
The prime suspect, police say, has links to the Bahujan Samaj Party’s BSP youth wing.
The police have collected the Facebook conversations of the past six months between the alleged victim – a 12th grader -- and the suspect and found that the youth, identified as Amit Bhadana, had been pestering the girl for a date.
He even posted objectionable comments on her wall when she refused to come out of her home and meet him, according to police.
On Saturday, as the girl returned home after attending her tuition classes at around 7pm in Shastri Nagar, Bhadana and three of his friends dragged her into a Tata Safari SUV.
They took her to a secluded house in Lakshmi Vihar locality, gangraped her and dumped her near her house at around 9.30pm.
Next day, the girl detailed the incident to her mother and later to the police.
A senior cop said a hunt was on to arrest the four suspects and one of the other suspects was identified as Shobhit Gurjar.
The matter was reported to the police on Sunday evening which initially remained entangled in jurisdictional dispute between two police stations.
