Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi on Saturday requested his Uttarakhand counterpart Vijay Bahuguna to hand over the task of reconstructing Kedarnath to the Gujarat government.

“Met Vijay Bahuguna ji. Conveyed to him that Gujarat is ready to take responsibility of renovating the Kedarnath temple complex,” Modi tweeted at 8 pm. He later told the media,  “Gujarat has offered to modernise the whole complex.”

By making the offer, Modi is apparently reaching out to a vast constituency of devout Hindus who are shocked at the tragedy amid charges that there was lack of preparedness on part of the Congress government.

This apart, Modi’s offer is an oblique claim that he is the only man who can efficiently deliver; and the Congress-run state and central governments are not efficient enough to ensure safety of their citizens.

The offer comes on a day when Bahuguna told the media that the Archaeological Survey of India’s help would be sought to rebuild the damaged temple.

Uttarakhand flash floods: A tragedy twice over for Delhi victims' families

For families of those killed in last year's devastating flash floods in Uttarakhand, it's a double whammy. Eight months later, they still have to face a cumbersome process to get compensation as promised by the govt, thanks to bureaucratic red-tapism.
