Gurgaon couple adopts girl who survived Uttarakhand floods

She touched millions of hearts when she was shown on TV screens recovering at a hospital, with both legs fractured. Her hospital records read- name: unknown; address: unknown and age: three years.

The girl had got separated from her parents during the catastrophic flash floods in Uttarakhand this year and no one came forward to claim her. The hospital staff gave her a name, Jyoti.

And after an official committee recently cleared her adoption by an affluent Gurgaon-based couple, she will soon have an address too. Jyoti was found injured in the worst-hit Kedarnath valley in June this year and was admitted to Doon hospital where she was treated for fractured legs.

She missed her parents, whom she could not name, and cried whenever she remembered them. Local residents used to bring food and toys for her.

District social welfare officer Ram Avtar said two couples had applied for adopting Jyoti, though scores had made oral offers, but the scrutiny of the applications cleared the request by the Gurgaon couple after a thorough check of their credentials. The officials did not name the couple as requested by them.

Jyoti is currently staying at a government children's home. Anjana Gupta, in-charge of the institution, said Jyoti has recovered fully and has a good time at the home.

About 10,000 people died in the flash floods that also caused widespread damage to roads and other infrastructure. Skeletal remains of the pilgrims are being recovered even now in the higher reaches.
