CPI-M Politburo member Brinda Karat has lauded the Tripura government for creating a model of development for tribals constituting one-third of the state's population.

'When tribals in other parts of the country are living in darkness afd backwardness, Left ruled Tripura is like a luminous lamp in terms of uplift and development of tribals,'Karat said at Jirania in West Tripura district on Saturday.

Addressing the open session of the 19th conference of Gana Mukti Parishad, the tribal unit of CPI-M, she said, 'Tripura has created a model of development for the tribals who constitute one third of the population.'

Karat said that last year 3000 children died of malnutrition in tribal inhabited areas of Maharastra and the rate of child death in tribal areas is highest in Madhya Pradesh where the tribals are victims of poverty and exploitation by the ruling classes.

She appealed to the tribals to strengthen their organisation so as to achieve their demands and fulfil the asprations of the people.
