An assistant sub inspector (ASI) of police, posted at Bathanaha police station of north Bihar’s Sitamarhi district, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly having unnatural sex with a nine-year-old boy.
Birendra Prasad Gupta, ASI, was arrested and sent to judicial custody after being produced in a local court. The action came in the wake of a strong directive from senior police officials that he should not be allowed to escape.
According to official sources, Gupta assaulted the boy sexually at a secluded spot near the Bathanaha police station after luring him there by offering him sweets.
The matter came to light when the parents of the boy reported the matter to the police after the victim gave them an account of how he was assaulted by Gupta.
When Sitamarhi superintendent of police (SP) Pankaj Kumar Sinha learnt of the matter, he ordered immediate arrest of the accused to prevent the matter snowballing into mob protest.
Confirming Gupta’s arrest and production in court, the SP said the victim's parents had filed a complaint against Gupta under various sections of the Indian penal code and protection of children from sexual offences act.
“The procedure for placing Gupta under suspension will be started soon, along with initiation of departmental proceedings against him," Sinha told HT.
