The gang members were also facilitating some examinees in ticking the right answers with the help of sophisticated mobile phones far away from the examination centres.

Police say the gang has been operating for the past few months by using info technology and mobile phones.

"It is a big breakthrough," said IG (operations) Amit Kumar.

Elaborating on the case, he said the gang members had managed to leak the question papers of the SSC examination (for appointment of lower division clerks in central government) from one of the examination centres at Best Point school in Rajiv Nagar locality in the morning.

Subsequently, the papers were sent via e-mail to Bhagalpur, where some of the experts, hired by the gang, wrote the answers so that it could be communicated to examinees in different centres.

“We are trying to identify the examinees who had taken help to answer the papers through this gang,” said Kumar, adding that prima facie investigations had revealed that the gang had taken R2 lakh to R10 lakh from the examinees to provide the right answers.

Kumar said the answers were communicated to the examinees through bluetooth devices and sophisticated mobile phones.

In total, three laptops, one desktop, scanner and 17 cell phones were seized from the arrested persons following police raids at Bhagalpur and Patna on Sunday.

The IG said the police received a tip-off on the opertions of the gang late Saturday night and secured vital leads by arresting one Suresh Kumar from Patna Junction roundabout. On the basis of details gathered during his interrogation, the police managed to arrest other members of the gang.
