After Ram Sene in Mangalore, it now appears to be the turn of Bajrang Dal unit in Puducherry to “warn” local hotels and restaurants against organising special programmes to celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14. Taking the cue from Sene, the little known Bajrang Dal unit
asked the territorial government to ensure that no hotels and organisations hold any programme on Valentine’s Day.

Celebration of the occasion was an “utterly alien culture” and it should not be “imported” to India, A Kannan, organiser of the local Bajrang Dal unit, said in a press release here today.

He said hotels and restaurants would only sow seeds of ‘perversion´ in the minds of youth by holding Valentine’s Day programmes, which the Bajrang Dal strongly opposed.

The government and police should prevent such functions, he said adding that Bajrang Dal activists would lay siege to those places where programmes were held and stage protest demonstrations.

Valentine’s Day is celebrated every year with few special functions but without much fanfare in this former French colony. The current threat surprised officials here as none of the Sangh Parivar outfits, including the Bajrang Dal, have a major presence in the union territory.
