An international wrestler who is now a known name in the drug trade circles, Jagdish Singh carries a rather misleading nickname, Bhola, which means ‘innocent’ in Punjabi. But if the police are to be believed, in the smuggling business Bhola’s codename is the more Bollywood-ish ‘King-ku’.

Bhola, who won an Arjuna Award in 1997 and was an inspector in Punjab Police before he was dismissed over his criminal record, is beings seen as the kingpin of the drug racket busted after the March 3 arrest of NRI Anoop Singh Kahlon in Fatehgarh Sahib.

Kahlon, who is now being seen as a smaller fish, has also named international boxers Vijender Singh and Ram Singh as his customers. Vijender has denied the allegation, but Ram has said they had taken the drug.

On a cue by Kahlon, the police raided Bhola’s house in Mohali’s Phase 10 on Friday; but he managed to escape. Four other arrests were made the same day, but Bhola’s arrest remains key. Teams have been sent across the region to nab Bhola, who allegedly distributed the drug also among sports circles too.

According to information with the police, ‘King-ku’ was the code used in deals by other smugglers of Bhola’s racket.

“Even in international heroin smuggling trade, King-ku is a renowned name with connections in the US and Europe,” a source in the police said, adding that the smuggling from India was done via China and Nepal.
