A local court remanded self-styled godman Asaram — accused of sexually assaulting a minor — to a day’s police custody on Sunday evening.
After his arrest from his Indore ashram around 12.30am on Sunday, Asaram was brought to Jodhpur at noon. He was taken to the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary’s 1st Battalion Campus in Mandore in a luxury vehicle and interrogated for five hours. Thereafter, he was produced before the court.
The police demanded two days’ custody, which was turned down by the judge. The court also rejected Asaram’s plea to allow him to live at his ashram in Jodhpur. Later, the police team took Asaram to his ashram at Manai, around 30 km from Jodhpur, for the verification of the crime spot.
AC guesthouse, not cell, for Asaram
Instead of a jail cell, Asaram would be spending the night in an air-conditioned room at a guest house located at the campus of the Rajasthan Armed Constabulary. Asaram had not demanded any special facility, but refused to sleep on the bed, saying it was “impure”. The police had to arrange a mat for him to sleep on.
