Border Security Force (BSF) has instructed its troops deployed along the frontier with Pakistan not to become "easy targets" for the enemy and resort to "strong retaliation" in the wake of increase in ceasefire violations.

"The troops have been asked to function strategically and not become easy targets to the enemy's fire. They have also been asked to retaliate strongly whenever it is required," a senior official said.

The directions have been sent across to commanders and through them to troopers deployed along the Line of Control and the International Border border by the Force headquarters in New Delhi.

In the wake of escalation in ceasefire violations by Pakistan, Union home minister Sushilkumar Shinde will also be meeting BSF personnel in Sambha district on Tuesday.

136 ceasefire violations have been reported so far this year, the highest in the past eight years. Even on Monday, Pakistani Rangers opened fire at 10 border posts, injuring two persons.
