Fearing massive protests over anti-Islam movie Innocence of Muslims made by an American national, the Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday took unprecedented measures in to maintain peace in the state.

The government snapped cellular phone and internet services and imposed curfew-like restrictions in volatile parts of Kashmir to keep protesters at bay.

Violent clashes, however, broke out in several parts of the Valley.

The move came an hour before the Friday prayers to ensure that social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter were not used by protesters to organise massive street protests.

The government, however, said the ban was imposed to stop anyone from viewing of the objectionable movie clip.
