A senior government official was found dead under mysterious circumstances in his house in Srinagar on Monday.
Rakesh Gupta, 50, special secretary, science and technology department, was found dead in his one-room accommodation at Tourist Reception Centre's Kong Posh hotel.
The hotel provides accommodation to the government officials hailing from other parts of the state, mainly secretariat employees.
Gupta, who, police say, is a resident of Jammu's Channi area, was spotted dead by a hotel employee.
The hotel employee told the police he found Gupta dead around 7 am when he went to clean the room. The door of the room was open, according to the employee.
"We have not found any injury mark on his body. There was no weapon at the scene," a senior police official said on the condition of anonymity.
The police are ascertaining the cause of death and have started an investigation. Statements of the eyewitnesses were recorded. "The body was sent for a post-mortem examination earlier in the day. We are waiting for the forensic science laboratory report to know the cause of death," the officer said.
The police have filed a complaint under Section 174, a case of suspicious death.
In the afternoon, the body was airlifted to Jammu and handed over to the relatives for the final rites.
