Police on Saturday rescued 140 civilians stuck in an avalanche-prone area of south Kashmir's Kulgam district.

According to police spokesman, 140 civilians including 50 children and 45 females, were evacuated from Waltengu Nad on Friday.

“A rescue operation was launched on Friday evening in Waltengu Nad in Qazigund tehsil, which is prone to snow related casualties and property losses. The operation was suspended last night and was re-launched on Saturday morning under the supervision of Kulgam SP, Mohammad Shafi,” said the spokesman.

Top police officers of the district supervised the day-long operation that was launched after an avalanche warning issued by the authorities.
