Kashmiri footballer Majid Yousuf Dar has filed a Rs. 50-lakh suit against a Mumbai production house for portraying him as a married man during a court scene in a Sony TV serial.

In 2012, a photograph of Dar appeared alongside the mug shots of criminals in a scene from Anurag Basu directed movie, Barfi. After Dar sued them, Barfi producers, UTV Motion Pictures, had apologised to him and paid damages.

“My friends and relatives called me and said I had been depicted as a married man in the serial, Chanchan, in May this year. The producers have probably downloaded my picture from the Internet and misused it,” said Dar.

Dar’s lawyer Sajad Sultan said a legal notice has been sent to Chanchan director Aziz Khan, executive producer Harishankar and the production house, Optimystix Entertainment Private Limited.

Sultan said Dar’s marriage is scheduled next month and the latest episode has not only dented his reputation but also put a strain on his personal relationships.

“I am suspecting a pattern here. I want to know if my picture is being deliberately used to malign me or it is a mere coincidence,” said Dar, one of the Valley’s reputed footballers.
He has participated in various national tournaments such as Durand Cup, Federation Cup and Santosh Trophy.

Sources said officials of the production house, which has described the use of Dar’s picture as “fair play”, were negotiating a settlement with the footballer.
