Defence spokesman Naresh Vig told Hindustan Times that Manzoor Ahmed Khan alias Shams Bhai was held during a joint operation by Rashtriya Rifles and the special operations group of the police.

He said Khan was chief coordinator of operations of the LeT in north Kashmir. Manzoor is a resident of the north Kashmir district of Kupwara and was originally associated with Hizbul Mujahideen, but switched to the LeT.

According to other sources, Manzoor was coordinating between the two organisations and was responsible for joint strikes. He had recently been assigned the additional responsibility of the LeT’s north Indian operations.

Deputy inspector general of police JP Singh said the army and the police had launched a hunt for the militant after threatening posters had appeared in villages in the Pattan area nearly two weeks ago.

He said Manzoor was arrested from a vehicle, adding that the security forces had also seized arms and ammunition from him.
