Kerala forest and cinema minister KB Ganesh Kumar, who was in the eye of a storm for some time, resigned from the two-year-old Oommen Chandy government late on Monday night after his wife filed a complaint against him alleging physical assault and mental torture.

The minister, also a cinema actor, has tendered his resignation to the chief minister after his wife Yamini Thankachy filed a police complaint under the domestic violence act. Earlier on Monday she called a press conference and criticised the chief minister in strong terms for hushing up a domestic violence case and shielding her husband. Kumar is the lone member of Kerala Congress (Pillai) in the ministry.

Opposition Left Democratic Front has demanded the resignation of the chief minister for covering up a complaint of domestic violence and shielding his colleague.

Kumar's wife Yamini Thankachy, a medical doctor, said she had approached the CM last month to complain about domestic violence she suffered at the hands of her husband.

"I went to the CM with a complaint. But he refused to accept it and promised me to settle everything amicably. But now I feel cheated by the CM," she said at a hurriedly held press conference.
