The family of a Dalit student of IIT-Roorkee, who had allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the fifth floor of his hostel, has alleged that some other students had made "casteist" remarks against him. Manish Kumar, a resident of Muzaffarnagar, had died on Saturday and was cremated
on Monday evening after his body was brought to his hometown following post-mortem in Roorkee.

Mahender Kumar, the uncle of the deceased student, alleged that "casteist" remarks were made by some senior students against his nephew and he complained about it to the authorities of IIT-Roorkee.

However, no action was taken against the students, he claimed and demanded an independent inquiry into the incident.

Manish was a student of B.Tech third year at the institute. The authorities of the IIT-Roorkee could not be immediately reached for reaction to the allegations.
