Two days after a policeman was caught on camera slapping a 23-year-old woman inside the Sahibabad police station in full public glare, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) on Wednesday issued a suspension order against the erring sub-inspector. He has also initiated a departmental inquiry into the incident.

The action comes after a report was submitted by a circle-level officer on Wednesday.

“Based on the footage, we have suspended the sub-inspector. A departmental inquiry has also been initiated into the incident. The statement of the woman, her male friend and others who were present at that time of the incident will also be recorded. The suspended policeman will be sent to Police Lines,” said Nitin Tiwari, senior superintendent of police.

The erring sub-inspector was earlier posted at the Shalimar Garden police post.

The incident took place on Monday. The woman and her male friend were allegedly found consuming alcohol inside a car in the Vikram Enclave area of Ghaziabad. They were also found in a compromising position by residents, the police said. The couple allegedly entered into an altercation with residents when the latter opposed to their act. The residents, then, called up the police. In the melee, the woman allegedly slapped a constable.

However, the police managed to take the couple to the Sahibabad police station where the sub-inspector was caught slapping the woman on camera.

Also, a woman resident was found manhandling the 23-year-old in the footage.According to the police, the couple’s medical examination has confirmed that they were drunk.

Two FIRs have been registered against the couple.
