In a string of rapes that have marked the past few months in Bengal, a Class-6 student was allegedly raped by an unidentified youth on Friday at Katwa in Burdwan district, 170 km north of Kolkata.

The 13-year-old girl was rushing to school around 11 am when she was dragged into a bamboo grove and raped.

“The victim has been sent to Katwa hospital for medical test,” said SMH Mirza, Burdwan police superintendent.

“The girl came running into my room and broke into tears. I called the women teachers and telephoned her father and the police,” said school headmaster Ramnarayan Hazra.

Locals told HT that criminals had a free run in the area.

Katwa had shot to headlines on February 26 when a woman was raped and CM Mamata Banerjee alleged her husband was a CPM activist who was trying to malign her government. The husband, however, had died 11 years ago.
