Vehicular movement was thin and few people ventured out in certain areas of West Midnapore district on Tuesday following a shutdown called by the CPI (Maoists) to protest against Centre's decision of going ahead with the nuclear deal.

The dawn-to-dusk bandh disrupted life in Maoist-affected region of neighbouring Purulia and Bankura districts.

In West Midnapore's Belpahari, Lalgarh, Binpur, Jambani, and Jhargram, private vehicles were mostly off the road and people remained indoors.

While, offices remained open, all business establishments in the respective areas were closed.

"Personnel of armed police were patrolling the areas to avoid any untoward incident," Additional SP (operation) S K Choudhury said.

The Maoists had pasted posters in different parts of the three districts of West Bengal to declare the bandh.
