The accused is said to be the manager of the hotel owned by a MLA and also his relative, sources told HT. The Umaria police, however, have not not confirm this yet.

The victim made a complaint at Aurangabad in neighbouring Maharashtra late January 30 night following which a FIR was registered under section 376 at the Kranti Chowk police station in Aurangabad.

“The woman had approached the police as she had lost her bag in the train by which she arrived in Aurangabad from Hyderabad.

"She broke down while recording her statement and reported the rape,” additional commissioner of police, Aurangabad Naresh Meghrajani told HT over telephone.

The Inspector-General of Police of Shahdol range (under which Umaria falls), Ved Prakash Sharma, confirmed that the Maharashtra police have reported the matter to them, but no action has been initiated as yet.

“We are awaiting the arrival of the case diary and the victim, which is expected on Friday. We would initiate suitable action then,” the IG said.

Sources in Aurangabad said that in her FIR, the foreign victim has mentioned that she arrived in New Delhi on January 8 and reached Bandhavgarh via Katni thereafter.

She stayed at the hotel Jungle Inn and took a tiger safari at the national park, during the course of which she got acquainted with the accused.

On January 14, the accused reportedly mixed some intoxicant in the beer he offered to the victim and later in the night when she regained consciousness in her room, she found the accused in her room and that he had raped her.

She was reportedly terrified by the incident and left the hotel next morning, went back to Katni and later decided to continue her booked tour to Nalanda and Bodh Gaya in Bihar, Puri in Orissa and then on to Hyderabad.

She had reportedly tried to narrate her ordeal to some policeman in Katni but due to the language barrier, she could not convey the details.

Terrified, she then decided not to report the matter, until she had to approach the police in Aurangabad, sources added.

“The victim knows only Korean and very little English. We got in touch with some other Korean tourists staying in city and with their help got her detailed statement. We have converted it into an English FIR and faxed the same to the MP Police,” the Aurangabad ACP said.

He added that a Aurangabad Police team would be leaving for Katni late on Thursday night with the victim and also carry the case diary.

“We would be helping the MP Police with investigation and we are also ready to appear in court if needed,” Meghrajani said.

The Umaria SP Manohar Singh, however, denied receiving the FIR and insisted that any action would be taken only after the victim and case diary reach here.

He also denied that the accused was relative of the hotel owner and said that he was only an employee – as per according to preliminary information.
