Despite New Year Eve celebrations being a low-key affair in the city under the impact of Delhi gangrape incident, police and administration have made elaborate arrangements to check hooliganism, drunk driving, speeding and other forms of undesirable revelry.

Police parties have been placed at 26 strategic points across the city right from the morning to maintain order.

Police had also been deployed in hotels and clubs where New Year Eve parties were being organised in the wake of appeal from some outfits to cancel New Year Eve parties and celebrate the occasion in a solemn fashion.

A few of them had warned of protests outside the party venues if their request was not conceded to.

Liquor shops were closed by 11.00pm and bars by 11.30pm, which further dampened the New Year spirit of party lovers.

Reviewing the law and order arrangements in Bhopal in connection with new year eve celebrations on Monday afternoon, Bhopal collector Nikunj Shrivastava had instructed the officers to ensure that liquor shops were closed down by 11.00 pm, bars by 11.30pm and hotels by 1.00am.

Police officers and officials of excise department were jointly assigned the task to monitor the situation.
