The Shivpuri woman who was thrown out of the house for bearing a girl child was probably also made to undergo a prenatal sex determination test and attempt was made to terminate her pregnancy on this basis.

While talking to HT, the woman claimed her husband tried to force her to terminate the pregnancy when she was six months pregnant, saying the doctor told his (the husband) that she was carrying a girl child.

After HT told this to the Shivpuri superintendent of police, RP Singh, he said a supplementary statement would be taken from the woman and investigation would be initiated on its basis. "She did not tell this to us earlier. But now we will take this up too," he said over the telephone.

Meanwhile, Bhagirath has been arrested and has been lodged in jail, the SP confirmed. The accused would be questioned on the sex determination aspect too, he said. Ruhi's mother-in-law, Champa, is still absconding.

Ruhi said her husband had taken her for a check-up to a female doctor near Vishnu Temple in Shivpuri when she was six months pregnant. "After the check-up my husband started pressurising me to get the pregnancy terminated, saying he did not want a girl.

I refused and the doctor also refused saying the termination wasn't possible at six months," she said.

Bhagirath then continued to harass Ruhi and finally threw her out of the home with her three week old girl child and mother on January 11 night.

After Ruhi Jatav complained to the SP, a case was registered against the husband and the mother-in-law under the Dowry Act and for threatening to kill and harassment. Presently, the child is undergoing treatment at the Shivpuri district hospital.
