A 30-year-old married woman, working as a nurse in a private clinic, was allegedly gangraped by three men when she was returning home after finishing her duty at the medical establishment.
The incident took place on Friday evening at Fakir Tola under town police station in Saharsa, the district headquarters town of the north Bihar district of the same name.
The accused were identified as Mohammad Mauzib, Mohammad Sajin and Mohammad Lal Babu, all three being residents of Fakir Tola, where the victim, too, lives.
“All three have been arrested after the victim named them in an FIR she has lodged at the town police”, said Saharsa supeintendent of police (SP) Ajit Kumar Satyarthi on Saturday.
In a statement given to the police, the victim claimed that the accused persons accosted her when she was returning to her Fakir Tola residence from the private clinic where she works.
“They forcibly took me to a nearby orchard where they raped me. Somebody found me lying unconscious there and took me to hospital”, she has said in statement given from her hospital bed.
The clothes of the victim, mother of two children, have been seized. “We will get them scientifically examined to get to the bottom of the matter”, the SP said.
He said the police were also looking into the role of Mohammad Firoz, who had brought the nurse to hospital after the alleged rapists left her unconscious in the orchard.
The SP said some clarity in the case would emerge after the victim’s clothes were examined for tell tale marks. “The medical report would take some time in coming. Meanwhile, the accused have been sent to jail”, he added.
Mohammad Mehboob, owner of the private clinic where the victim works, claimed the nurse was absent from duty for the past 15 days. “It’s wrong to say she was returning from duty when the incident occurred”, he insisted.
The police are also examining the possibility that Firoz may have used the nurse “to settle scores with the accused”, with whom he allegedly had a tiff, recently.
