Gurgaon has witnessed a sudden spurt in murder cases during the current year. As many as five cases have been reported in the city in the last two days.

As against 80 murder cases reported last year, 12 have already been registered ever since the year kicked off. As many as 85 murder cases were reported in 2011.

The recent murder of Rakesh Yadav, resident of Badshahpur and wrestler-turned property dealer-turned newspaper distributor, has spread fear among the local denizens.

Unidentified bike-borne assailants had shot Yadav at the gates of Tau Devi Lal Stadium on Sunday evening.

The police suspect the involvement of the deceased's cousin behind the crime.

Police officials said the deceased had picked up a fight with his cousin some time ago and the latter has gone missing after the murder.

The deceased had also allegedly assaulted two newspaper hawkers some time ago over the distribution of newspapers. The police are also probing their role.

DCP (west) Surinder Pal said, "The number plate of the motorbike was of a Maruti Alto car belonging to Sandeep Shukla, resident of Uppal South End. The bike had been stolen. The call details of the deceased show that he received 17 calls on Sunday. We are studying the call  records."An eyewitness told the police that a car was parked near the stadium and had helped the shooters to flee

The accused had pumped five rounds of bullets into Yadav's head. He was rushed to Medanta-The Medicity, where he was declared brought dead.
