A man who did not let his wife withdraw a rape case she had filed against his elder brother was charged with abetment to suicide and arrested after the 54-year-old victim committed suicide at Kanwali village, 27kms from Rewari town, on Sunday.

The woman, whose identity has been withheld, was raped by her brother-in-law on January 25.

She was being asked by her maternal family to withdraw the case. However, her husband was opposed to this and had asked her not to change the statement against her brother-in-law, 60-year-old Sajjan Singh, also the husband of the victim's aunt.  He is presently in prison.

Caught up between her husband and maternal family, the victim was reportedly under psychological stress. On Saturday, she took the extreme step at her residence while her husband was away. Police have now booked the deceased woman's 58-year-old husband on a complaint by another brother-in-law of the victim.

Asked about the logic behind booking the woman's husband for abetment to suicide and the role of the victim's maternal family members, Rewari superintendent of police Pankaj Nain said investigations were on. “We will take requisite action after probing the case from all angles.”

Khol station house officer Narender Singh confirmed the news: “We have charged her husband with Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the Indian Penal Code.”
