Harassed by neighbour, Alwar girl kills herself

A 19-year-old woman, who had committed self immolation on Thursday, succumbed to burn injuries on Friday at Sawai Man Singh hospital.



The victim was allegedly molested by her neighbour for five years after which she set herself on fire on Thursday at Ramnagar in Alwar, 150 kms from Jaipur.

The police arrested the accused identified as Rajesh Jogi on Thursday on charges of attempt to rape and harassment.

Now the charge of abetment to suicide would be added in the case, said Alwar deputy superintendent of police Ashok Kumar Meena.

The victim was admitted at Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital with severe burn injuries from where she was referred to SMS hospital.

“The victim reached SMS hospital at 3 pm on Friday and died at 4:15pm. She had suffered 85% burns injuries. The best efforts were made but the victim could not be saved” said Dr Rajesh Sharma, public relations officer SMS hospital.

Heera Singh, younger brother of the victim, had demanded capital punishment for the accused.

“My sister died because of him and he should meet the same fate” he said while waiting for the post mortem outside the mortuary at SMS hospital.

In the FIR, the victim had alleged that Jogi harassed her for five years and had been forcing her to get married to him.

He had threatened to kill her father and brothers if she did not agree to marry him, she said in her statement to the police.

The victim said due to fear and shame she had not told her parents about harassment.

The victim’s statement was recorded before the magistrate at Alwar on Thursday.
