A photographer’s intense desire for sakshaat darshan (personified sight) of Lord Shiva has led to his death along with four family members, the police said on Thursday.

Eight members of the family consumed poison-laced prasad and three survivors are battling for life in hospital.

The bizarre incident occurred at Nasian colony of Gangapur city in Sawai Madhopur district, about 160 km from Jaipur, on the wee hours of Tuesday.

According to the police, Kanchan Singh, 45, organised a yajna at his house on Monday night and invoked Lord Shiva. When the Lord did not appear, the family consumed poison-laced laddoos and expressed desire to meet him through death.

Incidentally, Singh video recorded the incident and the police have seized the recording.

Gangapur city circle officer, deputy superintendent of police Rajesh Beniwal, said the family could be seen in the video mixing poison in the laddoos and consuming them willingly.

The police are investigating information that Singh was in touch with some tantrik and often talked of ways to meet God.

Beniwal said Singh’s niece informed the police about the incident after regaining consciousness on Tuesday morning.

The police rushed the eight members of the family to a local hospital where Singh, his wife Neelam, 40, daughter Dreamy, 16, son Pradyuman, 12, and brother Deep, 40, were declared dead on arrival.

The condition of the survivors — Singh’s mother Bhagwati, 70, nephew Love, 11, and niece Rashmi, 23 — is stated to be critical.

Beniwal said the police were examining the video recording to ascertain involvement of any outsider.
