Cops in Howrah were attacked while conducting a raid at Dumurjola on Sunday night to arrest notorious criminal Jaiprakash Singh, alias Jackie, prime accused in the murder of gangster Palash Das in May 2011.

On a tip off that Jackie and his associate Vicky were hiding near Dumurjola Stadium, a three-man police team from Chatterjeehat Investigation Centre raided the spot at 11 pm. However, the situation spiralled out of control when Jackie’s associate attacked the cops and a section of local joined in the mayhem.

Cops say that the two were involved in the recent murder of Kishori Parui in Bally. Palash Das, who was found murdered in a warehouse, was Parui’s uncle. The police learnt of the duo’s whereabouts and raided the area after confirming that they were present at the spot.

“There was a celebration in the locality and many locals were inebriated. When the police began the raid, the women encircled the cops and attacked. Taking advantage of the situation, the duo fired a couple of blank shots and left the area,” a police officer said.

The cops were attacked with sticks and rods, and had bricks thrown at them. Two policemen, Biswanath Das and Sukhendu Chakraborty, sustained injuries.

While Chakraborty was discharged after being administered first aid, Das was admitted to Howrah State General Hospital. Howrah police commissioner Ajey Ranade said that no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
