The first phase of rural polls in West Bengal, covering the Maoist-affected areas of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia, went by and large peacefully despite the opposition Congress and CPI(M) alleging rigging, violence and booth capturing in some areas.

Till 4 pm, West Midnapore had recorded 63%, Purulia 59% and Bankura 51% polling, according to the State Election Commission reports.

“The most important fact is that in Jangalmahal polls went on peacefully,’ said chief minister Mamata Banerjee at the state secretariat on Thursday.

Apart from the state police, nearly 150 companies of central forces were pressed into action in the three districts, while helicopters maintained aerial surveillance.
