The state government is set to lay down new fire safety norms for the city's mercantile buildings and markets.

"We will meet on March 25 at the KMC headquarters to decide on the new fire safety norms for city's mercantile buildings and markets, both private and civic-owned. State fire minister Javed Khan would attend the meeting," said mayor Sovan Chatterjee.

Chatterjee said licences to 14 categories of trade presently require no NOCs from the fire and emergency services department. While the traders often manage to secure fire NOCs, the buildings they operate in don't comply with even minimum fire safety norms.

"We would weigh the fire safety measures undertaken by different mercantile buildings before issuing trade licences either to the 14 listed category of trades or others," Chatterjee said.
