The state also provided assistance to the family of the murdered cleric Maulana Ruhul Kuddus, whose death led to widespread violence on Tuesday in Canning, Joynagar, Kultali and Basanti and the burning of 200 houses and displacing more than 2,000 people.

“We have provided Rs. 10,000 each, to 93 families displaced by the violence. We have also given Rs. 3 lakh to the family of the murdered cleric,” district magistrate Narayan Swarup Nigam said on Thursday.

Kuddus was killed late on Monday night while returning from a religious congregation. He was reportedly carrying Rs. 11.5 lakh that the attackers looted. Protestors attacked police on Tuesday when they tried to take away his body. Six policemen were injured.

Six people were arrested on Thursday, taking the total number of those arrested for the violence to 52. Police said those responsible for the murder of Kuddus were still at large.
