An undertrial escaped from SSKM hospital on Sunday afternoon amid allegations that policemen guarding him were drunk. Senior police officials said they were looking into the allegations and necessary proceedings would be initiated if the cops were found guilty.

Garden Reach resident Mohammad Shahzada (35), accused in a robbery, was lodged in Presidency jail and admitted to the orthopedic department in Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital on April 3. Hospital superintendent Tamal Ghosh said Shahzada underwent a minor surgery on his shoulder.

“Shahzada asked cops on duty to let him go to the bathroom. He locked the door from the inside and escaped by breaking open the bathroom window. We have launched a manhunt for him,” Bhowanipore officer-in-charge Buddhadeb Mukherjee said.

There were allegations that Shahzada had a drink with the two police men guarding him and made the daring escape after ensuring that the cops were inebriated.
