To engage young voters, social networking site facebook has introduced a ‘Register to Vote’ feature for its Indian users. Through this platform, people can share status updates and individual stories on voter registration.
The site also provides a link to Form 6 on the Election Commission’s site http://ecicitizenservices.nic.in/frmForm6New.aspx for people who are yet to register.
If analysts are to be believed, users of social media are going to have a decisive voice in the results of the imminent general elections in India.
With over 820 lakh Indian citizens now on facebook, the social media giant has already emerged as burgeoning platform to discuss candidates, campaigns and critical issues facing the country.
Facebook India public policy director Ankhi Das said, “It is our core mission to build an open and a connected world. We have seen the social sharing helps rally people around causes, build communities and increases participation.”
“The launch of Register to Vote feature for facebook’s Indian users will lead to will create increased awareness of the voter registration process and influence a higher percentage of people to register to vote,” she said.
According to the Election Commission an estimated 7,780 lakh people are eligible to cast their votes in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Of this a whopping 170 lakh (approximately) are first time voters, aged between 18 and 19.
“We do expect this tool to produce grassroots momentum and engagement,” Das added.
