If wetland areas in and around the state capital are utilised properly, the city has the potential to become a hub for eco-tourism in the state.

Students of zoology department of Lucknow University recently carried out an extensive survey and identified a few locations that are suitable for the purpose. These include Katoutha Jheel on Faizabad Road, Bakshi-Ka-Talab area, Telibagh, PGI area, wetlands behind Ambedkar Park etc.

Now, the department is busy compiling a comprehensive report on the basis of their study carried out a few days back. This will then be presented before the UP biodiversity board officials on Thursday.

“Most of the areas studied have not been conserved properly but if maintained, they can be transformed into eco-tourism spots. If these wetlands can be made a little green with additional floral and fauna, wonders can happen,” said Amita Kanaujiya, a professor of the zoology department.

Five teams from the varsity had gone for field study to spot probable locations.

Kanaujiya suggested that if activities like cattle grazing, use of pesticide, freshwater chestnut (singhada) cultivation, dumping garbage, levelling the wetland with mud for agriculture and other purposes etc can be curbed, the eco-tourism potential of the spots can be well utilised.

"All the water bodies covered in the survey vary from about 1 to 10 hectares. The biodiversity studied in these areas include algae, green algae, water lily, dhatura, lotus, hydrilla, shawni, jalrani, sarataphillum, water clove, heliotropium, riccinus, madar etc," Kanaujiya said.

The World Wetlands Day (February 2) was celebrated on Saturday by UP state biodiversity board. Department of zoology, University of Lucknow, and department of applied animal sciences, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University actively participated in the event.
