In yet another major weapons haul in the city, the police on Friday arrested a firearms dealer in Chinhat with eight pistols, two revolvers and two gun silencers. The dealer was reportedly supplying Munger made pistols and revolvers to Uttar Pradesh politicians.
Police said the arrested dealer Manoj Tiwari of Ambedkarnagar had supplied firearms to many politicians during the Vidhan Sabha-2012 elections and has confessed having links with several politicians and their aides. They said Tiwari’s movement had become frequent in the city again with the possibility of general elections by the end of this year, as the accused said, demand for firearms increases during polls.
Notably, this is for the first time that gun silencers, which are used to reduce the sound of bullets, have been recovered in the city. Senior superintendent of police (SSP) J Ravinder Goud said the recovery of weapons in Lucknow is shocking, as this would subsequently lead to increase in crime graph. Admitting that the accused has links with some politicians and had supplied weapons during previous assembly elections, Goud said the movement of firearms dealers in the city has become frequent in the last few months and the police teams are making efforts for their arrest and curb firearms smuggling.
Explaining the gang’s modus operandi, in-charge of anti-extortion cell Nagendra Chaubey said, “The accused used to bring the firearms from Munger, Bihar and sell them here at Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 25,0000. He used to travel in general class train compartments from Bihar to Lucknow and used to keep the bag containing weapons in other people’s seat. He would later collect the bag on reaching his destination, however, he used to leave the compartment if cops used to notice the firearms.”
“Tiwari has revealed some crucial information about firearm dealers. We are working on the information extracted from him and some more recoveries are likely in few days,” added Chaubey. Notably, this is the second major recovery of illegal weapons in the last 10 days. On March 23, the crime branch had collared three firearm dealers in Aliganj and recovered three 0.32 bore pistols. Their arrest had revealed that the state capital is being used as a main transaction point for firearm dealings.
