A 22-year-old fourth year BTech student, Ankur Abhishek, from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) drowned in Vihar lake, on Sunday.
One of the friends he had gone with to the lake, had also fallen into the water, but survived. The Mulund police said Abhishek was taken to Rajawadi hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Abhishek's friend, too, was brought to the hospital for treatment. "Fortunately, in the friend's case, water had accumulated in his abdomen and not lungs. He was sent home after initial treatment," a doctor said. The Mulund police have registered an accidental death report in Abhishek's case and investigations are on.
The institute said four students including Abhishek had gone to Vihar lake in the morning. Around noon, Abhishek was wading through the water over uneven rocks when he lost his balance and fell in.
"There was no help at hand and they were at a distance along the shore and over a hillock so to reach IIT for any immediate help was difficult," said UA Yajnik, dean of student affairs, in the same statement. "Even with mobile phones, it was difficult for them to convey their location to friends." It was more than an hour before additional help could arrive. "Finally, the lifeguard staff of the IIT swimming pool arrived and found the body around 3pm," Yajnik said. The student's family has been informed.
"We mourn the tragic loss and convey our heartfelt condolences to his family," said Devang Khakhar, the institute's director.
