The owner of a popular coaching class was arrested on Thursday for allegedly verbally abusing and molesting a student in his cabin the day before.
Machindra Chate, owner of Chate classes, was released on bail after giving a surety of Rs. 15,000, the police said.
According to the Bhoiwada police, the girl, a 17-year-old HSC student, was enrolled with the Sion branch of the coaching class. However, she and other students were upset as the staff had not covered portions of the syllabus.
"On Wednesday evening, five students, including the victim, and a few parents went to Chate's office in Dadar. An argument erupted and the girl demanded to know why Chate was not taking responsibility. Chate then allegedly verbally abused the girl in front of others, grabbed her left shoulder and pulled the top she was wearing," said Patil, quoting the complaint.
The embarrassed girl broke down, following which her uncle slapped Chate twice, the police said.
The girl and her family approached the Bhoiwada police and a case was registered. The police have also registered a non-cognisable offence against the girl's uncle for allegedly assaulting Chate.
Chate surrendered himself before the police on Thursday afternoon after which he was produced before a local court.
The coaching class staff, however, alleged that the student had transferred from another branch and was creating a ruckus about the syllabus not being completed. "She abused our boss and made a scene," said a staff member. "She also hit him and his assistant. This is a false complaint."
