Domestic flight operations in and out of the Mumbai airport have been the most delayed as compared to five other metro airports in India, according to the civil aviation ministry’s latest data on flight punctuality.

The average on-time performance of domestic airlines at the city airport was 74.42% while Kolkata airport was the best with 90.14 % of its flights operating on time. The Delhi airport despite being the busiest in the country had an average of 79.32%.

“Being a land locked airport, operations in Mumbai require the highest standard of discipline. But the dismal records reflect that the discipline is missing,” said a senior aviation ministry official.

“The airport has three rapid exit taxiways adjoining its main runway. Delays would be fewer if pilots takes the first runway exit after touchdown, but many flights take time to vacate the airstrip.”
